True albinism in birds and other species is a natural, though rare annomaly marked by a total lack of pigment. Albino hummingbirds can be distinguished by their snowy white feathers but most importantly their pink beak, eyes, and feet. The hummingbird recently seen and photographed at Strawberry Plains Audubon Center on September 1, 2012 by Curt Hart and Allen Sparks is known as a leucistic ruby-throated hummingbird, note the black bill and eyes and the buff colored shoulders. Though not as rare as a true albino hummingbird, this is the first time a leucistic hummingbird has been spotted at Strawberry Plains.
